Victron 12V GEL Deep Cycle Batteries are characterized by their cycle-resistant VRLA technology.
VRLA stands for "Valve Regulated Lead Acid", meaning these batteries are regulated by a valve. This allows any gases that may form to escape through safety valves, making the batteries extremely leak-proof and allowing them to be used in any position. Additionally, they are completely maintenance-free.
These sealed GEL batteries contain the electrolyte in a gel made of silicates. This construction leads to a longer lifespan and makes the batteries particularly suitable for applications with regular charging and discharging cycles. However, their effective capacity may be lower at high discharge currents. Nevertheless, they show remarkable longevity in both standby operation and cyclical use.
Another advantage of Victron VRLA batteries is their low self-discharge rate, which is below 2% per month at 20°C. This rate doubles with every 10°C temperature increase. Under cool conditions, the batteries can be stored for up to a year without the need for intermediate charging.
Victron batteries also exhibit excellent performance after deep discharges, although it should be noted that frequent and prolonged deep discharges can still lead to irreversible damage.
The stated nominal capacity is based on a discharge time of 20 hours, i.e., a discharge current of 0.1 C. A lower discharge current results in a higher effective capacity, while a higher discharge current reduces it, as shown in the tables in the datasheets.
