Do I need a battery temperature sensor?

With the temperature sensor for battery temperature compensation, the charging voltage is automatically increased at low temperatures (winter operation), allowing the weakened battery to be charged better and faster.
At summer temperatures, the charging voltage is lowered, thereby reducing the stress (gassing) on the battery and increasing the lifespan of sealed (e.g., gel) batteries.
